Claude Code’s new easter egg: You can actually keep a pet in the terminal?

Claude Code has quietly launched a digital pet system — simply enter /buddy to hatch your own exclusive virtual pet. It comes in 18 species, has five-dimensional attributes, and can even chat with you.

You read that right — you can now raise pets in Claude Code!

Claude Code hid a small Easter egg in version v2.1.89. Just type the following in the terminal:

/buddy

and your very own digital pet will appear, squatting next to the input box. It’s not just an emoji — it’s a full system with levels, personality, and the ability to chat with Claude.

🪄 How to start?

  1. Update Claude Code to v2.1.89 or above;
  2. Open the terminal, type /buddy and press Enter;
  3. A rainbow-colored message will appear at the bottom of the screen. If it’s your first hatch, a pet will be generated automatically;
  4. Its name and “soul description” are generated by Claude, unique to each user.

In short, your pet is bound to your account—the same userID will always hatch the same pet. There’s no “reroll” mechanism.

🐾 Species encyclopedia: 18 types — who’s the chosen one?

According to the official source, the Buddy system includes 18 species:

  • 🦆 Duck
  • 🐈 Cat
  • 🐉 Dragon
  • 🐙 Octopus
  • 🐌 Snail
  • 🐧 Penguin
  • 🦦 Capybara
  • 🌵 Cactus
  • 🤖 Robot
  • 🍄 Mushroom
  • 🦎 Salamander
  • 👻 Ghost
  • 🐇 Rabbit
  • 🐢 Turtle
  • 🐥 Goose
  • 💧 Water drop
  • 🦉 Owl
  • 🟣 Chonk (round, squishy creature)

Rarity levels come in five tiers:

| Tier | Probability | Color | Hat Decoration | |------|--------------|--------|----------------| | common | 60% | Gray | None | | uncommon | 25% | Green | Random | | rare | 10% | Blue | Random | | epic | 4% | Purple | Random | | legendary | 1% | Gold | Random |

There’s also a hidden setting—Shiny edition, with a mere 1% chance to trigger. If you happen to get a legendary + shiny combo, you’re one in ten thousand lucky.

📊 Five-dimensional attributes: every pet has a personality

The Buddy attribute system follows an RPG style. Each pet has five stats:

  • Debugging
  • Patience
  • Chaos
  • Wisdom
  • Snark

Values generally range from 0–100, with one peak stat and one weak stat per pet. For example:

My snail’s highest stat is 95 Patience, and its lowest Chaos stat is only 12.

The rarer the pet, the stronger the base stats. Algorithm rules: the highest stat = +50 + random 0–30, the lowest = −10 + random 0–15, and the remaining three fluctuate between 0–40.

Think about it—it’s like Pokémon-style personality distribution, where Claude embeds a “tiny soul” into each pet through math.

💬 Interaction: it really talks

Whenever Claude finishes a reply, your pet will “read” the whole conversation and say something in a bubble.

Its speech lasts around 10 seconds, then fades away. If you scroll the screen, it disappears automatically to avoid blocking your code. You can talk to it directly—Claude recognizes the pet’s existence and won’t steal its lines.

Interaction commands include:

  • /buddy pet → petting animation ♥♥♥
  • /buddy off → temporarily hide the pet
  • /buddy → summon again

When your pet talks, it can enter an excited mode, with fast frame animation. It feels like there’s a little creature living inside your IDE.

⚙️ Technical deep dive: the magic of deterministic generation

The source code snippet reveals that the pet generation logic works like this:

userId + 'friend-2026-401' → hash → Mulberry32 PRNG → rollRarity → rollSpecies → rollStats

This means a pet’s appearance, rarity, and attributes are determined by the user ID, independent of the server, with no saved files. In other words: your account is your destiny.

Want to change pets? Sure—just use a different userID to “reincarnate.” But you can’t reroll through restart or refresh.

❤️ Extended play: status-bar pets + Tamagotchi mode

The community has already built extensions — for example, the ccpet project displays pet emojis in the status bar, allowing you to feed it tokens while coding to keep it alive. Its energy decays every three days and resets upon death. There’s also a Claude Code Tamagotchi version where the pet supervises Claude’s operations.

Honestly, this “AI + pet” combo feels far more alive than just emojis. The longer you code, the longer it stays with you.

🔗 Summary

  • /buddy is the entry command, available from v2.1.89+.
  • 18 species, 5 rarity levels, shiny mechanic.
  • Five-dimensional attributes with unique AI-generated personality.
  • Your pet can interact—and even supervise Claude.

Claude Code turns “developer experience” into a digital pet game, embodying true internet spirit.

OpenAI Hub now supports the Claude model interfaces as well. If you want to try this innovative feature, you can directly call the Claude Code model API to experience what it’s like having a little companion coding with you in the terminal.
